Emerging Contaminants: Tackling Microplastics in Wastewater

At Viridis, we specialize in wastewater treatment across the entire textile value chain, from manufacturing upstream to the washing of clothes in our homes downstream. Recognizing the global challenges in water quality, we are actively expanding our focus to include emerging contaminants like microplastics.

Every time synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic are dyed, washed, or processed, they release microscopic plastic fibers into wastewater streams. These microplastics are too small for conventional filtration systems, allowing them to bypass treatment plants and eventually enter our rivers, oceans, and drinking water sources.

To combat this, Viridis is actively exploring solutions through:

The Challenge

A leading global appliance manufacturer retained Viridis' expertise to evaluate the technical efficacy of our system in decomposing microplastics and reducing organic contaminants present in washing machine effluent.

Our Approach

Viridis employed its proprietary OHrionreactor system. his patent-pending system is specifically designed to capture and decompose microplastics directly from household washing machine discharge.

For this case study, we successfully treated wastewater samples generated from washing and rinsing cycles of polyester fabrics. The results demonstrated the efficacy of our technology in mitigating microplastic pollution in the treated wastewater.

The Results
  • Overall COD in the wastewater sample was reduced by 95%

  • Our system successfully captured 96% of microplastics released during the wash cycle.

  • Our technology successfully decomposed captured microplastics at a rate of 2mg/hr.
